Private label dog supplements are made by a manufacturer and sold under your brand. At Welsdom you can choose soft chews, powders, capsules or liquids, and start with as few as 100 units. Expect about 4 to 8 weeks from approved sample to finished stock, plus time for formula work, labelling and the regulatory notice your product needs.

Production line for private label dog supplements and pet products

Dog owners already buy supplements for joints, calm, digestion and coat, so the category is easy to explain to customers. The hard part for a new brand is everything behind the label: choosing a format, getting the minimum right, and making sure the product can legally be sold. This guide covers what to expect, step by step, based on the questions founders ask us most.

What private label dog supplements can you make?

Most dog products fall into six benefit categories. These are the ones we manufacture most often:

CategoryTypical ingredientsCommon format
CalmingL-theanine, chamomile, valerianSoft chews
Joint and mobilityGlucosamine, chondroitin, MSMSoft chews or powder
DigestiveProbiotics and prebioticsPowder or soft chews
Skin and coatOmega-3, biotin, vitamin ELiquid oil or soft chews
Daily multivitaminVitamins and mineralsSoft chews
ImmuneAntioxidants, mushrooms, botanicalsSoft chews or powder

You can launch with one product or a small line. Most first-time founders start with a single hero product, such as a calming or joint chew, then add a second SKU once reviews come in.

Formats: which one fits your dog brand?

Welsdom makes private label dog supplements as soft chews, daily powders, capsules and liquids. Here is how they differ in practice:

  • Soft chews are the most popular consumer format for dogs. Dogs take them like treats, and that keeps owners consistent. They cost more per unit and take the most development, because flavour, texture and dose all have to work together. Flavours include chicken, beef, bacon, peanut butter and salmon, in standard, mini and large-breed sizes.
  • Powders cost the least per serving and handle large doses. Owners scoop them onto food, so they suit high-dose joint and probiotic formulas.
  • Capsules are compact and precise, but many owners have to hide them in food. They work well for clinic channels and owners used to pilling their dog.
  • Liquids such as fish oil pumps make dosing by body weight easy and suit small breeds.

Our private label dog supplements service page lists the categories and formats in one place.

Minimums for private label dog supplements: what 100 units means

Our pet program starts at 100 units. That is low enough to test a product with real customers before you commit to inventory. Here is what founders should know about small runs:

  1. Unit cost is higher on small runs. Setup, testing and labelling are spread over fewer units. Plan your launch price for that, then bring the unit cost down on a reorder.
  2. Format affects the practical minimum. A powder in a stock pouch is the easiest to run small. A soft chew with a custom flavour, size and printed pouch may need a larger run to make sense. Your quote will confirm the minimum for your exact product.
  3. Packaging can be the real constraint. Custom-printed pouches and jars often have their own supplier minimums. Labels applied to stock packaging keep a first run flexible.
  4. One formula, two sizes counts as two SKUs. A 30-count and a 90-count pouch share a formula but need separate labels and packing.

Our post on launching low-MOQ pet supplements covers how to plan reorders once the first run sells.

How private label dog supplements are made, step by step

Every dog supplement project follows roughly the same path:

  1. Brief. You tell us the benefit, format, flavour direction, dog size, target quantity, country and sales channel. A clear brief saves a round of samples.
  2. Formula and samples. Our R&D team builds the formula for the need you are targeting, then sends samples for taste and texture testing. Soft chews usually need more rounds than powders.
  3. Label and claims review. We check the ingredient list, directions by body weight and claims wording against the rules for your market.
  4. Production. We manufacture in a Health Canada GMP-certified facility in Newmarket, Ontario, with quality checks at several stages.
  5. Delivery. Finished product ships to your warehouse, Amazon, Shopify fulfilment, a clinic, a retailer or a 3PL.

Typical timelines run 4 to 8 weeks from approved sample to finished inventory, depending on the formula, packaging and order size. The time before an approved sample varies more: an existing formula moves faster than a custom one, and the regulatory notice described below must be filed before you sell.

Rules for private label dog supplements in Canada and the US

Canada. Most dog supplements sold to maintain or promote health are veterinary health products (VHPs). Health Canada requires you to notify it at least 30 days before selling, and every active ingredient must be on its List C of permitted substances. The label must also show the statement “Veterinary health product / Produit de santé animale.” See Health Canada’s veterinary health products page for the current requirements.

VHPs can’t claim to treat, prevent or cure disease. “Supports healthy joints” fits; “treats arthritis” would make the product a veterinary drug. Labels sold in Canada also need English and French text, which we support.

United States. The FDA regulates animal food and drugs, and many states use AAFCO model rules for pet product labels. Many US dog supplement brands also join the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC), an industry group with its own quality seal program. Membership is voluntary and is your brand’s choice.

Ingredient safety. Dogs react differently from people. Xylitol, a sweetener used in some human products, is dangerous to dogs, as the FDA warns. Ingredients are screened for the species before a formula is approved.

What drives the cost of private label dog supplements?

We don’t publish fixed prices, because the quote depends on your product. These are the factors that move the number most:

  • Format. Soft chews cost more to make than powders.
  • Actives and dose. Premium ingredients such as green-lipped mussel or specific probiotic strains cost more, and higher doses use more of them.
  • Flavour and palatability work. Masking a strong-tasting active takes extra development.
  • Packaging. Stock pouches with labels cost less than custom-printed jars or pouches.
  • Quantity. Bigger runs spread setup and testing over more units.

A useful rule: decide your target retail price first, then work backwards to the unit cost your margin needs. That tells you which format and dose are realistic.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum order for private label dog supplements?

Welsdom’s pet program starts at 100 units. The exact minimum for your product depends on the format, flavour and packaging, and your quote confirms it. Small runs cost more per unit than larger reorders.

How long does it take to launch a dog supplement?

Typical timelines run 4 to 8 weeks from approved sample to finished inventory. Allow extra time before that for formula development, sampling and label review, and file any Health Canada notice at least 30 days before you sell.

Do dog supplements need an NPN in Canada?

No. NPNs are for human natural health products. Most dog supplements for general wellness are notified to Health Canada as veterinary health products instead, using ingredients from List C.

Can I sell the same dog supplement in Canada and the US?

Yes, Welsdom serves brands in both countries. The formula can often stay the same, but labels usually differ: Canada needs bilingual text and VHP wording, while US labels follow FDA rules and state requirements.

Which format is best for a first run of private label dog supplements?

Soft chews sell best because dogs take them willingly. Powders are cheaper and better for high doses. If budget is tight, start with a powder and add a chew version once the formula has proven itself.
